Emily Greene Balch was a sociologist, educator, and peace activist. Balch graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1889 in its first graduating class and studied sociology with Franklin Giddings and at the Sorbonne in Paris. On her return to the United States in 1892, Balch co-founded and served as head of Denison House, a settlement in Boston. It was at this point that she met Jane Addams. She built an alliance of workers, labor leaders and reformers in Boston, called the Federal Labor Union, and helped found the Women's Trade Union League, setting up a Boston branch in 1904. Balch taught sociology at Wellesley from 1900 to 1918, and took an active role in many progressive issues, including child welfare, industrial education, immigration and labor conditions.

The outbreak of World War I led Balch to study and advocate for world peace. Taking a leave from Wellesley, she joined Jane Addams at the 1915 International Congress of Women held at The Hague, representing the Wellesley branch of the Women's Peace Party and the Boston chapter of the Women's Trade Union League (WTUL). Balch was part of the delegation that met with the leaders of both belligerent and neutral nations to discuss mediation efforts. Together with Addams and Alice Hamilton, Balch edited Women at The Hague.

In May 1916, Balch was named one of two American delegates to the Neutral Conference for Continuous Meditation. Unable to persuade President Wilson to adopt the group's resolutions, she opposed the United States entry into World War I, and like Addams, Balch's peace activism had implications. When she applied for an additional leave of absence to pursue peace work, Wellesley College terminated her employment in 1918.

Balch dedicated the rest of her professional life to peace. She wrote a book outlining her ideas for ending the war, Approaches to the Great Settlement (1918), and with the establishment of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, Balch served as secretary and treasurer from 1919-1922, and as the League's representative the League of Nations. After Addams' death in 1935, Balch became the honorary international president, promoting mediation, disarmament, and international relations. Balch opposed fascism and reluctantly supported the need for World War II. She advocated for welcoming victims of Nazi aggression and worked on behalf of Japanese Americans and their families detained in camps during World War II. She also defended the rights of conscientious objectors. In 1946, Balch was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and donated her share of the prize to the WILPF.

Balch never married, and died in 1961 in Cambridge, MA.
