Description

In November 1919 the Women's Peace Party changed its name to become the United States section of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Located in Chicago in 1919, it moved to New York in 1920, to Washington in 1921, and to Philadelphia in 1946. The goals of the section were "to promote methods for the attainment of that peace between nations which is based on justice and good will and to cooperate with women from other countries who are working for the same ends."

The United States Section is comprised of local branches that conduct legislative and educational work. State chairs help coordinate work throughout the state, and report to the National Board of Directors. The Board is made up of state chairs, national officers and others. It elects officers, appoints committee chairs, directs national work, and distributes publicity and educational materials. The organizations' members are women, with men allowed to be associate members in 1921.

The United States section of WILPF supported total disarmament, efforts for a fairer economy, the settlement of international disputes, and peace education. In the 1920s, the section hosted the Fourth International Congress of Women and a national tour of peace activists on the "Pax Special." It lobbied against the deportation of Communists and compulsory military training for men, investigated conditions in Haiti, and campaigned against United States intervention in Mexico. It supported the United States' entry into the League of Nations and developed model treaties that it was hoped would outlaw war.

In 1932 the United States Section organized a Peace Caravan that gathered support for disarmament, in 1933 it lobbied to curb munitions profiteeting, and highlighted the role of armament manufacturers in the outbreak of wars. It pressed for the United States to join the World Court but Congress rejected the issue in 1935. It began the People's Mandate to Governments to End War, which called upon popular support to make war an untenable action. As World War II began, differences of opinion were revealed over the United States response, but 75% of its membership voted for neutrality. Once the United States entered the war, the WILPF-US section worked towards mediation and determining what peace would look like. They supported civil liberties, helped refugees from Europe, helped resettle Japanese Americans from California, and opposed conscription.

At the end of the war, the WILPF-US helped develop programs for reconstruction and relief in Europe. It supports the work of the United Nations, disarmament, the cessation of nuclear weapons testing, and efforts to create an more just world both economically and politically.
