My dear Miss Tarbell
Your invitation to come to see you at Bethel is very enticing and I am declining with real disappointment, but I am quite convinced that it will be better for me to have your help and criticism later. I have written the first seven [page 2] chapters -- open of course to an enormous amount of change and elaboration -- and think that I would better go through to the end seven more perhaps, before I ask you to read it and talk it over with me.
I will be in Bar Harbor for most of September and then go to Bethel Maine with my friend Miss Smith for October. [page 3] I could easily come to New York or wherever you may be, any time during October to see you. I am sure that I ought to do it ↑the book↓ pretty well en bloc if it is to have real unity-- it is quite different from the other things which I have done.
May I write you later as the child grows and thank you then as [page 5] now for being such a kind godmother!
Affectionately yours
