Biographical Text

Belle Case La Follette was a woman suffrage activist, peace activist, and civil rights activist. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, later working as a teacher after graduation. She then attended the University of Wisconsin Law School, becoming the school's first female graduate in 1885. La Follette gave many speeches regarding women's rights, suffrage, and civil rights. She helped found the Woman's Peace Party in 1915 and the National Council for the Prevention of War in 1921 and was a member of the Women's Committee for World Disarmament. After her husband's death, La Follette was offered his seat in the U.S. Senate, which would have made her the first female Senator, but declined the offer.

La Follette married Robert La Follette in 1881. They had four children together. La Follette died in 1931.

La Follette and Jane Addams corresponded frequently, often discussing peace activism, suffrage, and education. She also appeared in Addams' letters regarding her husband and the woman's suffrage movement in Wisconsin.
