My dear Miss Addams: --
I did not mean that you should be the one to write first after your return from Europe. I did think of writing, but finally was determined to be in Chicago at the time of the reception which was tendered to you. This was made impossible, much to my disappointment.
May I at this late day tell you how proud I was, and how proud I am of the splendid recognition of your ability accorded you in this country and in Europe in your unselfish effort for the cause of Peace.
It was my good fortune to know you so many years before the world knew you that I have an almost selfish pride in all your splendid achievements.
