My dear Miss Addams:
I have just written to Col. Roosevelt asking him if he will speak at a great demonstration we will hold in New York sometime between Sept. 6th and Nov. 5 -- election day -- provided Ohio carries one amendment on Sept. 3rd. Could you place at our disposal any dates when you could come to New York so that if Col. Roosevelt agrees to speak, we can fit in a date convenient to you both?
We mean to make the occasion a very great one. [page 2] I believe you know the Women's Political Union knows how to do that when it sets to work.
We hope to get the Metropolitan Opera House, but it may be refused because of the political nature of the meeting. Perhaps the Manhattan company might yield. But in any case we shall have nothing less than Carnegie Hall of course.
It seems to me the occasion of celebrating the triumphant of true democracy in one of the eastern states for the first time, might be made by you & Col. Roosevelt a unique occasion to rouse the interest & patriotism of women. You would meet no chilliness among us!
