Biographical Text

Paul Howard Douglas was born in Salem, MA, and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1913 and earned a Master's degree (1915) and a Ph.D. (1921) from Columbia University. He was a professor of economics, first at the University of Illinois from 1916-1917, and then at Reed College and the University of Washington. In 1920, he settled in Chicago to teach at the University of Chicago, where he worked until 1949. In Chicago in the 1920s, Douglas launched his political career, serving as an economic advisor to Governors Gifford Pinchot of Pennsylvania and Franklin Delano Roosevelt of New York. He also worked to draft and lobby for laws establishing unemployment insurance and old-age pensions in Illinois. A Democrat, Douglas won election to the U.S. Senate in 1948, and he served his adopted state of Illinois from 1949-1967. He was best known for his staunch support for civil rights and public housing.

In 1915, Douglas married Dorothy Wolff, who also held a Ph.D. from Columbia University, and they had four children. The couple divorced in 1930, and in 1931, Douglas married Emily Taft, the daughter of sculptor Lorado Taft. She served in the U.S. Congress from 1945-1947. Paul Douglas died in 1976 after a long illness.
