My dear Mr Baldwin:

I have been away lecturing and missed your first letter in regard to Governor Russell. I imagine it is too late to sign now, and to tell the truth I am a little relieved. I once got into great difficulty in the South in signing a protest in ↑of↓ which I was not personally informed, and I have been careful since then about using my signature even in a comparatively clear case.

Perhaps you will let me talk over this general matter of signatures next time I see you. Believe me,

Faithfully yours,

Jane Addams. [signed]
