My dear Miss Balch

Will you mind if I want to defray your expenses to Washington & back so that you may be there next Friday?

I can't bear not to see you and I am sure it will make a great difference -- your being away. I have had one or two more letters from England which throw no light on the agitation of the Scandinavian women.

I know the expense isn't the reason for your not coming but please let me write that off as I am not coming to N.Y. [page 2]

You know the Scandinavian women as none of the rest of us do -- and that is the crux.
