My dear Mr. Lochner:
I was so much cheered by your report of Saturday that I did not say something which had not then very clearly formulated itself, but about which I seem to be increasingly clear.
I am quite sure that you ought to return to Europe almost immediately, if only for the psychological effect on Mr. Ford. I think you are awfully useful there and if Mr. Ford gets accustomed to the fact of you in this country and that the Neutral Conference is in the hands of a lot of people whom he does not know and with whom he is not personally connected, I am sure it will be bad in the end.
I should also feel enormously better about the Conference if you were there and I think there ought to be enough of us on this side to carry out the plans you spoke of on Saturday.
You are practically the only member of the Neutral Conference representing America and I think it is too bad to break that off. Will they, for instance, do all they ought to now in response to the President’s speech before the Senate? Isn’t it fine and isn’t the cause moving along?
I hope very much I can have your American address and if anything brings you near Chicago again before you go, that you will give me an opportunity to talk with you. Various things have come into my mind which I did not say the other day.
