Biographical Text

Charles Aked was born in Nottingam, England, where he grew up and attended Midland Baptist College and University College. He started his work as a Baptist minister in Syston in 1886; and from 1890 until 1906, he ministered in Liverpool, where he was a strong advocate of temperance. In 1907, he immigrated to America, accepting a pastorship at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in New York City. He was a popular lecturer and preacher, and he published many of his sermons.

Dr. Aked spent much of his life advocating for peace; he was a founder of the Passive Resistance League and took part in Henry Ford's "Peace Ship" in 1915 and 1916. In his later years, he ministered in churches located in San Francisco, Kansas City, and Los Angeles, where he died at the age of 77.
