Biographical Text

John A. Kingsbury was a social worker and teacher. After graduating from high school in Yakima, Washington, Kingsbury worked as an elementary school teacher and eventually became a principal and superintendent. He then attended Washington State College and the University of Wisconsin, graduating from the latter in 1906. In 1908 he was the assistant secretary of the New York State Charities Aid Association, and in 1909 he graduated from the Teachers College of Columbia University. Kingsbury was a member of many organizations in New York and was the general director of the New York Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor, commissioner of public charities, on the executive committee of the New York State Charities Aid Association, and secretary of the Milbank Memorial Fund. From 1918 to 1919 he was the assistant director of general relief for the American Red Cross in France, and in 1920 he was the director of the Department of Citizenship, YMCA, Army Educational Commission in France. From 1920 to 1921 Kingsbury toured Serbia on behalf of the Serbian Child Welfare Association of America, of which he was the director. He was also an administrative consultant to Harry Lloyd Hopkins of the Works Progress Administration and Aubrey Williams of the National Youth Administration. In 1950, Kingsbury was the national chairman of the Council of American-Soviet Friendship.

Kingsbury married Mabel Glass in 1910. They had three children together. Kingsbury died in 1956.
