Dear Miss Addams,

I ought not to write on official paper, for this is not an official letter; but I have no other by me. And I want to express my joy on reading in the Woman's Journal the account of your great Peace Meeting in Washington. It is glorious that women should be taking such a lead in constructive statesmanship. How I longed to be with you!

Our society -- the National Union -- has taken no "official" line about the war, but it will have to do so next week. Our Annual Meeting is held on Feb. 4th, 5th, & 6th, & resolutions about war & peace are on the agenda. We are all very much in [page 2] the dark as to how they will go, but I am full of hope.

I venture to send you a pamphlet I have just published.  You will see that I am an extremist! But it has been this war that has made me so. I cannot believe that such horrors can be justified by any motive.

 Yours very sincerely,

A. Maude Royden.
