Biographical Text

Bertha von Suttner, born Bertha Felicitas Sophie Freifrau von Suttner, was an Austrian pacifist and author. Suttner traveled around Europe for many years, working as a tutor to children. She was briefly employed as a secretary by Alfred Nobel, and although their time working together was short, the two kept in touch until Nobel's death in 1896. It is widely believed that Suttner encouraged and inspired Nobel to create the peace prize. After her travels, Suttner settled back down in Austria, where she devoted her life to pacifism. Her book, Lay Down Your Arms, was published in 1889, demonstrating a critical look at militarism and solidified her pacifist stance in public consciousness. She was the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905. Suttner died in 1914.

Bertha von Suttner was married to Arthur Gundaccar.
