Biographical Text

Nicholas Kelley was the son of Florence Kelley and Count Lazare Wischnewetzky. When his parents divorced in 1892, he took his mother's name as his surname. Kelley spent much of his youth at Hull House, leaving to attend Harvard in 1901. Kelley received his law degree there in 1909 and worked for the New York law firm of Cravath, Henderson & deGersdoff. He worked for the New York City draft board during World War I and served as Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department, working on loans to foreign governments. In 1934, Kelley joined the Automobile Labor Board which worked on carrying out the terms of an agreement that forestalled an auto strike. Kelley served as counsel, vice president, and director of Chrysler until his retirement in 1957. He supported many of the causes that his mother worked for, including the Legal Aid Society, the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, Swarthmore College, the Henry Street Settlement, and the League of Women Voters. Kelley died in 1965 after a long illness.

Kelley married Augusta Lewis Maverick in 1907. They had three children, Nicholas Jr. and Augustus M, and Florence M. Kelley Worgan.
