Biographical Text

Edgar Gardner Murphy was an activist as well as a clergyman. He became an Episcopal priest in 1893. In 1900, Murphy began his crusade to fight for better conditions for African Americans, as well as stricter labor laws for children. In 1904 he formed the National Child Labor Committee with Florence Kelley and Felix Adler. Murphy resigned from the Committee in 1907 after a disagreement on an endorsement of a bill regulating child labor in Alabama. Murphy joined the Christian Education Board as the executive secretary of the board, traveling around the country and writing extensively about his findings, meant to increase support for children's education. He left the Board in 1909 and published The Basis of Ascendancy, arguing that achievement was based on merit rather than race. Murphy died in 1913.
