CHICAGO POLITICAL EQUALITY LEAGUE

APPEAL TO WOMEN

"While you cannot vote for the Members of the State Legislature, you are vitally interested in the work of this representative body. You can be a great factor in determining the character of the next general assembly."

[Miss] <Jane Addams>
Resident <17> Senatorial District
Address <Hull House>

My dear Mrs. <Addams>

You are interested in an honest, efficient government. You are interested in the system by which you are taxed, in the handling of the state's finances on an economical basis, consistent with efficiency, and also in a CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION for the improvement of our state governmental machinery.

These are largely property values.

You are interested in giving childhood an untrammeled and adequate preparation for citizenship, in giving women sufficient compensation for work and reasonable hours of labor, in giving men and women one day's rest in seven, in the problems of modern education, including vocational training, in the care and responsibility of the parents for illegitimate children. You are interested in the state giving adequate care to its adult feeble-minded, and surely you are AGAINST REPEALING THE PRESENT SUFFRAGE LAW.

These are human values.

As a resident of senatorial district No. <17>, Your senator and representatives, who represented you when the foregoing principles were under discussion in the last session of the legislature at Springfield were

<John Burns (Dem) 622 Blue Island Dr>

<Jacob W. Epstein (Dem) 1133 Newberry St>

<Edw J. Smejkal (Rep) 500 Bunker St>

Did they represent you satisfactorily? Will you make an effort now that you may be truly represented in the coming session of the legislature? If so, please communicate in person or by phone or letter with your candidates, and ask them how they stand on the enclosed question, and any others in which you may be interested.

Will you ask two men in your district to do the same? Cards are enclosed for this purpose.

Women naturally believe in HUMAN VALUES above property values, and in keeping the balance between the two. You have HERE an opportunity to help choose legislators who will reflect the highest ideals of our present civilization.

Yours very cordially,

PRE-PRIMARY COMMITTEE FOR PRINCIPLES OF LEGISLATION.
