BOUCK WHITE DEFENSE COMMITTEE
27 WEST 36th STREET
NEW YORK CITY

My dear Miss [Addams],

You must have heard of the recent imprisonment of Rev. Bouck White for the now famous cartoon and of his coming trial, with ten of his church members, for the flag-melting ceremony of June 1st.

At this time of military madness it is an unpopular thing to preach internationalism and the brotherhood of man. These people have the courage to do this and to suffer for it -- if need be. They are fighting the fight of all of us. Therefore it is our duty to give to them moral and financial support.

All are poor. Three have children that must be cared for while the fathers are in prison. There will be fines, etc. Can you help us? I shall be glad to receive a check from you, no matter how small, to help in this critical time. I should like to add your name to our defense committee.

Sincerely,

Mary Allan Stuart.

Till Oct. 1st.
