Description

The King's Daughters Settlement in New York City was opened in 1890—originally created to help traveling nurses inspect slums, the Settlement grew to provide classes and assistance to the poor of the surrounding neighborhood. In 1901, the organization's name changed to the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement in honor of photographer and social reformer, Jacob A. Riis. Riis helped acquire the Settlement's then-headquarters at 48 Henry Street, and had been involved with the Settlement since its opening in 1890. The Settlement is still in operation today; since 1890, it has opened an Immigrant Services Program, continues to create programs for children, and has opened nine different locations across the city.
