Biographical Text

Elisabeth Gjørz was born in Denmark and met Jacob Riis when he was 16 and she 12. Gjørz refused Riis' marriage proposal in 1869, and he emigrated to the United States. She was engaged to a soldier who died before their marriage, and when Riis returned, a well-known journalist and photographer, she agreed to marry him. The couple settled in New York, and had three children.
