Biographical Text

William Stead was a pioneer of investigative journalism and the creator of the tabloid style newspaper. The editor of The Northern Echo and the Pall Mall Gazette, Stead wrote a series of articles in 1885 entitled The Maiden Tribute of Modern Babylon, which inspired the Stead Act, which raised the age of consent from thirteen to sixteen. He also reported on child welfare, social legislation and reformation of England's criminal codes. He co-founded Review of Reviews, a non-partian monthly, and was the first editor to hire female reporters. Stead was a prolific author, among his more famous works were If Christ Came to Chicago, The Truth about Russia, and The Americanisation of the World.

Stead married Emma Lucy Wilson in 1873 and the couple had six children. Stead was one of the more well-known passengers on the RMS Titanic, and he died when it sank on April 15, 1912.
