My dear Mrs. Blaine: --

I found your check for a thousand dollars in my mail this morning and want to write and thank you for it with all my heart.

I also want to send, if I may, a word of explanation. I agree with Mrs. Bowen that I ought not to have mentioned Mrs. Dunlap Smith's name, and apparently I did not in the least remember what she said. I cannot regret the misunderstanding, however, because I was much comforted by our talk of last evening. May I send you the enclosed clipping which as nearly as I am able, with my best conscience, states my position in the grossly exaggerated bayonet story.

Thanking you for your friendship which I have never found to fail me, I am

Faithfully yours,

Jane Addams [signed]

Mrs. Emmons Blaine
Chicago, Illinois.
