Biographical Text

Halbert P. Gardner was a retail merchant who served as the National Committeeman of the Progressive State Committee for Maine. Gardner studied at Patten Academy and then became a bookkeeper for his father's manufacturing business at the age of sixteen. He then lived in Boston and Colorado before returning to Maine and becoming involved in politics. Gardner served four terms in Maine's legislature as a representative and senator. In 1912, he was elected National Committeeman of the Progressive State Committee for Maine. In 1914, Gardner was nominated for governor. He was a member of the Masonic Order, the Knights of Pythias, the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, and the Sons of Veterans.

Gardner married Adelaide Darling in 1893. They had two children: Helen and Dorothea. Gardner died in 1952.
