Biographical Text

Agnes Nestor was the founder and leader of the International Glove Workers Union, holding positions such as national vice president, secretary-treasurer, general president, and director of research and education. She was a member and later President of the Women's Trade Union League. Nestor worked for Chicago's Eisendrath Glove Company as a teenager, which had many unjust practices, such as having employees pay a machine rental fee. This inspired Nestor to lead a successful strike of women workers at the company in 1902. She also helped organize unions in other industries, and worked as an activist for issues such as child labor, minimum wage, maternity health, the eight hour workday, and women suffrage. Nestor died in 1948
