Biographical Text

Augustus Peabody Gardner was a representative and military major. Both his mother and father passed, and he was adopted by his aunt and uncle. In 1886 he graduated from Harvard and went on to study law at Harvard Law School, though he never practiced. He served in the Spanish-American War as a general. In 1899 he was elected as a member of the Massachusetts Senate, serving from 1900 to 1901. Gardner was then elected to the Fifty-Seventh Congress after the resignation of William H. Moody, and Gardner went on to serve eight more terms. He was also the chairman of the Committee on Industrial Arts and Expositions. During World War I, Gardner resigned from Congress to enter the army as a colonel, but in 1917 he wanted to fight in combat, so he requested a demotion to the rank of major, which he was granted. He was placed in command of the 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry, 31st Division at Camp Wheeler in Georgia.

Gardner married Constance Lodge in 1892. They had a daughter also named Constance. Gardner died in 1918.
