Biographical Text

An immigrant from Denmark, Jacob Riis was a journalist who worked for the New York Tribune, the News, Scribner's Magazine, and the New York Sun. Riis is best-known for the flash photographs of tenement life that he took to illustrate his stories about the struggles of the poor. His best known work was How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York (1890).

Riis married Elizabeth Gjørz and had three children; after her death, he married Mary Phillips in 1907.
