Biographical Text

Born Millicent Garrett, to a wealthy merchant family, she married Henry Fawcett, a Liberal M.P., who also supported woman suffrage, in 1867. In 1890, she became head of the National Union of Woman Suffrage Societies, the largest suffrage movement in the United Kingdom. She was a moderate who opposed the violent law-breaking tactics of the Women’s Social and Political Union. Fawcett was involved in other social campaigns, including efforts to combat child abuse, child marriage in India, and to ensure civil rights. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1925.
