Biographical Text

Charles William Eliot was born to a wealthy Boston family. His biggest impact was in educational reform. He became President of Harvard in 1869 at age 35, the youngest ever elected, after exploring Europe's educational system and forming ideas about how higher education should work. He strongly advocated for vocational training, but believed that the student should have the "diversity of choice" to explore what they wanted to learn, an idea that remains in colleges to this day. He was an important member of the Progressive party. Though he was very tolerant in some ways, allowing blacks into Harvard and staunchly opposing imperialism, he was against the education of women. However, his impact on education and reformation of the system are still around today. In 1909, Eliot retired from his position after 40 years.

Eliot married Ellen Derby Peabody in 1858. They had four sons. Peabody later died in 1869. Eliot later married Grace Mellen Hopkinson in 1877. Eliot died in 1926.
