Biographical Text

Gilbert Murray was born in New South Wales, Australia. He came to England with his mother at the age of eleven and attended Oxford University. His translations of the ancient Greek drama appealed greatly to modern audiences. His many works include The Rise of the Greek Epic (1907) and Five Stages of Greek Religion (2nd ed.; revised and enlarged, 1925). Murray was a professor of Greek at Glasgow University and later at the University of Oxford.

Murray married Lady Mary Henrietta Howard. They had four children, Basil, Rosalind, Agnes, and Stephen. Murray died in 1957.
