Biographical Text

Kate F. O’Connor was a leading figure in the American woman suffragist movement, as well as a clerk, government employee, real estate and insurance agent, and labor activist. O'Connor studied drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago. In 1882, O’Connor began a sixteen-year career serving as the Deputy Clerk for the Winnebago County Court system. From 1933 to 1945 O'Connor served in a supervisory role for the United States Department of Labor of Illinois’ Divisions of Minimum Wage, Wage and Hour Law for Women and Minors, and of Women’s and Children’s Employment. O’Connor was a member of the Illinois League of Women Voters, General Federation of Women’s Clubs, and the Illinois Women’s Press Association.

O'Connor died of a heart attack in 1945.
