Description

The United States Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations is responsible for overseeing foreign policy initiatives and implementation. It deliberates on treaties, land sales, including the purchase of Alaska, and other international affairs. It worked closely with the Department of State, and as one of only ten original standing committee, it is powerful and prestigious. The Committee's power to ratify or reject treaties made it critical to peace efforts, as it weighed in on issues like the League of Nations and efforts towards world disarmament. The Committee, under the leadership of Henry Cabot Lodge, led efforts to reject the Treaty of Versailles over President Wilson's efforts. Its isolationism in the 1920s and 930s quashed international efforts, but by 1940 the Committee reversed its stance on neutrality and began funding Great Britain with the Lend-Lease program.
