Biographical Text

Shailer Mathews attended Colby College, where he later worked as a professor, and Newton Theological Seminary. From 1890 to 1891, he studied at the University of Berlin. He was a Baptist and established the Northern Baptist Convention. Mathews served as the convention's president in 1915 and was also the president of the Chicago Society of Biblical Research from 1898 to 1899 and from 1928 to 1929. From 1908 to 1933, Mathews was the dean of University of Chicago's Divinity School, and prior to being dean, he worked as a professor at the school. From 1903 to 1911, Mathews was the editor of the journals The World Today and the Biblical World, and an editorial adviser for Harpers. He was a member of the Chicago Co-operative Council of City Missions, the Chicago Baptist Executive Council, and of other similar groups, and was the first president of the Federal Council of Churches. From 1929 to 1932 he was president of the Chicago Church Federation. In addition, Mathews was a member of the Kobe College Foundation, on the board of trustees of the Church Peace Union, and was often involved in Hull-House.

Mathews died in 1941.
