Biographical Text

James Mullenbach attended Fargo College and Chicago Theological Seminary; he was ordained in 1901. Mullenbach did his graduate work at the Universities of Halle and Berlin in Germany. From 1901 to 1903 he was a pastor at Tabernacle Congregational Church. Afterward, he became chairman of the Labor Arbitration Board of Hart, Schaffner, and Marx and the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, severing as labor mediator. Mullenbach was also Superintendent of the Municipal Lodging House in Chicago, Assistant Superintendent of United Charities of Chicago, Executive Secretary of the Cherry Relief Commission, Executive Secretary of the Committee on Social Legislation, Superintendent of the Cook County Infirmary, and a member of the Chicago Board of Education. In 1909, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Mullenbach as an Inspector for the U.S. Immigration Service in Chicago. Later, in 1934, Roosevelt appointed him to special labor boards for the oil, steel, and textile industries.

Mullenbach married Anne Louise Towns in 1902. They had five children together: Katherine, Margaret, Jane, Philip, and Anne. Mullenbach died in 1935.
