HULL-HOUSE

CHICAGO
April 11, 1929.
My dear Mr. Maddox,
I returned only a fortnight ago from Arizona, where I spent two months convalescing from a long attack of influenza. While I am doing a certain amount of speaking in Chicago my doctor has forbidden out of town engagements, until my heart has recovered its tone -- whatever that may mean. Of course, I hope to be much better by June but I think on the whole it will be much safer for me to decline your kind invitation.
May I ask to give my sincere regrets to the class who so kindly suggested me for speaker. Sixty-five is indeed imposing!
Hoping to be more fortunate another time, I am
Faithfully yours
