My dear Mr. Goodspeed:

May I express my appreciation of your article on Mr. Hutchinson in the University Record of January. I am so very glad that it was done for I felt the Chicago papers were singularly inadequate of their report of him.

I also wish to apologize for my failure to send something to you. I had written out a short article but it seemed rather too intimate to send. It was ↑turned out to be↓ largely ↑an↓ appreciation of his attitude towards me during the years of the war. While he did not in the least of course, share my opinion, he was not only tolerant but sympathetic throughout. and I felt that we were still so close to the war that it might possibly embarrass you or at least, be misunderstood if I sent it.

With sincere gratitude for the article, I am,

Faithfully yours,

Jane Addams [signed]

Mr. Thomas W. Goodspeed,
University of Chicago,
Chicago, Illinois
