Biographical Text

Bolton Hall was a lawyer and author known for his progressive activism. Born in Ireland, Hall and his family immigrated to the United States in 1868. He attended Princeton University and then attended Columbia Law School. He then became a lawyer and progressive activist. He was a leader of the American Longshoremen's Union, serving as its treasurer in 1898. Hall also supported the single-tax theory, founding the New York Tax Reform Society. In addition, he was the founder of the back-to-the-land movement. In 1916 Hall was arrested for distributing pamphlets on birth control.

Hall married Susie Hurlbut Scott in 1884. They had two children together. Hall died in 1938.
