Dear Miss Addams:
Referring to the suggested work for the National Federation of Settlements by Dr. Thomas, I had an opportunity last night to discuss this matter somewhat fully with Miss Culver.
She requested me to ask you if it is your belief that a work of this kind would be practical and would result within a reasonable length of time in real benefit to immigrants and to the social settlements in the United States in dealing with them.
She said that if you are convinced of the value of this work, she would be very glad to see Dr. Thomas employed in it and would make a donation of $5000 to the National Federation of Settlements for the purpose, if the Federation feels that something worth while can be accomplished for that sum, or that it can obtain elsewhere any additional funds necessary to accomplish such work as it has in mind.
Miss Culver said that she would like it if one of the incidental aims of this work, if it is undertaken, might be to forward the cause of international peace.
You probably know that Dr. Thomas is at present in Chicago with Mrs. Thomas and that they are living in “The Midway” apartment building at #1535 East 60th Street. Telephone Midway 1624.
