Biographical Text

Girolamo Savonarola was an Italian preacher and reformer who is best known for his attacks on the corrupt clergy in 15th Century Italy. Savonarola was sent to Florence in 1482, and by 1486 had gained notoriety for his contention that the church was corrupt and needed to be scourged before it could be renewed. Savonarola expanded his critiques to the government of Florence and became a widely popular political leader. In 1498, Savonarola was finally arrested, tortured, and found guilty in an ecclesiastical trial and was executed.
