Biographical Text

John A. Davis and his family moved to Illinois when he was fourteen. He was not educated after the move, but he was known to be very interested in history and political science. Davis was a farmer and a member of the town's legislature, and later he was a colonel and one of the leaders of the 46th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War.

Davis was married to Amy Springer They had four children together, though only two survived to adulthood. Davis died in 1862, due to wounds gained in the Battle of Shiloh. Davis had a room named for him at the Abraham Lincoln Center settlement, and Jane Addams delivered a tribute to him when this room was dedicated to him, as he was a member of her family.
