Biographical Text

Winifred Sweet Bonfils grew up near Chicago, and won her first journalist position in California at the San Francisco Examiner, William Randolph Hearst's first paper. Using the pseudonym Annie Laurie, Black wrote in the new style of "yellow journalism", or muckraking. Using this style, she exposed San Francisco's lacking receiving hospital and saw to the purchase of a city ambulance.

She was married to colleague Orlow Black from 1892 till their divorce five years later. She later reported from Europe during WWI, and a biography of Phoebe Apperson Hearst. She died in 1936 in San Francisco, CA.
