Biographical Text

Elvira Carrè was an influential leader of the Methodist community in New Orleans, working with the Christian Women's Exchange. Carrè managed her husband's lumber mill after his death. She hosted Jane Addams during her 1901 talk to the Southern Methodists in New Orleans.

She married Walter William Carrè in 1862. She was later widowed in 1877. They had seven children, only four of whom survived to adulthood.
