Biographical Text

Prince Petyr Alexelvich Kropotkin was a Russian nobleman who served in his youth as an army officer with a Siberian Cossack regiment. Kropotkin also studied geography and glacier formations while in the army, gaining notoriety and the opportunity for a scientific career. He worked for the Russian Geographical Society until 1872, when he renounced his noble birth and dedicated his life for social justice. Kropotkin declared himself a socialist, and then later an anarchist, working with the Chaiykovsky Circle. He became a propagandist for anarchism, calling for decentralized cooperative organizations to take over government. Kropotkin was imprisoned by the Russian government in 1874. In 1876 he escaped prison and fled to Europe. There he was admired among radicals and helped to establish anarchist movements in various countries. Kropotkin was imprisoned in France for sedition from 1883-1886, and thereafter he lived in England until 1917, when he returned to the newly formed Soviet Union. Kropotkin's writings made scientific arguments for anarchism and collectivism as a way to improve the species. His books include Mutual Aid (1902) and Fields, Factories and Workshops (1899), as well as books on Russian literature and history. Kropotkin argued for education as a means of improvement. Kropotkin's return to Russia after the Revolution and was welcomed by the new government, but he disagreed with their top-down approach to government. Kropotkin died in 1921.
