Biographical Text

Irving Pond studied civil engineering and received a degree from the University of Michigan before coming to Chicago in 1875. For the next ten years, Irving Pond was either working for various architect and construction firms, or performing in a traveling circus.

Irving Pond partnered with his brother, Allen Pond, in 1886 to create Pond and Pond Architects. They would work together for the next 40 years. Pond and Pond never took extremely large commissions, but they had many loyal clients, including Hull-House. Pond and Pond worked closely with Hull-House, building both the Hull-House complex and Chicago Commons. They went on to study urban settlement house building, as well as design other buildings related to social services.
