Miss Jane Addams,
at Hull House, Chicago.

Dear Miss Addams, --

I have just been running over afresh some portions of your "Spirit of Youth" and feel moved to express my great admiration and obligation for the insight I have always derived from your writings. You have a womanly and a poetic comprehension of human nature which enables you to see its nobility even in the most ignoble expressions. I have often said in public that I know of no one among contemporary writers in this whole field who has so much power of interpretation as you have. Like Browning's Fra Lippo Lippi, you make us see what we have always seen and never seen.

Do not take time to answer this. I obeyed an impulse in writing you.

Gratefully yours,

Walter Rauschenbusch [signed]
