My dear Mrs. [Breckinridge]: --
Your sister and I talked over the situation last night at some length.
I cannot tell you how sorry I am that I added to your troubles by my letter. I only sent one letter to Miss Shaw -- an exact copy of the one you had -- and I should be awfully sorry if you should resign on the basis of that letter episode. Do wait until something more tangible comes up! I hope you will at least stay throughout the year. It may be the "sacrifice" we are called upon to bear for the dear cause!
You know, I am sure, how very much I admired your action at Nashville -- everything you did there. It was almost worth the whole thing to have had the experience there with you.
I have just written Miss Shaw and Mrs. [FitzGerald] that I cannot accept my election as honorary vice-president. I am enclosing a copy of my letter to Mrs. [FitzGerald] so that you may be quite clear about it. I have also written to Mrs. McCormick, from whom [page 2] I found a telegram upon my return. I am going to write you more fully later on, but I am sure you know how much I appreciate your efforts for me.
