Nineteen hundred twelve.
Dear Miss Addams:
Please accept my thanks for your new book A New Conscience and an Ancient Evil. It always gives me especial pleasure to receive a book from you, and I am glad that you are writing as many as you are. Your works are having a great influence, and this influence will last a long time.
Do you remember how I frequently used to urge you to write more even if it involved some shifting of your activities?
I find myself in pretty general agreement with you, but I am not so sure that you are right in your advocacy of votes for women as in other respects. I see some objections to granting the suffrage to women, but at the same time I am not as yet prepared to take a position of radical antagonism to it.
With best wishes,
Faithfully yours,
