Biographical Text

Thomas Allan Hoben received his education at the University of New Brunswick in Canada and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, where he graduated in 1901 as valedictorian. He was a pastor at the Union Church of Waupun, Wisconsin, from 1901 to 1904, and he later became a pastor of the First Baptist Church of Detroit. He was the Director of the Baptist's Students' Guild of the University of Michigan. Hoben later became a professor of Homiletic and Pastoral duties at the University of Chicago. During World War I, he went to France and worked on recreational activities for soldiers. Hoben was also Field Secretary of the Chicago Juvenile Protective Association, President of Hyde Park Social Settlement, and Director of the YMCA 5th Division A.E.F. From 1919 to 1923 he was a professor at Carleton College, and from 1923 to 1935 he was president of Kalamazoo College.

Hoben was married to Jessie Emma Lindsay Hoben, and they had a daughter together named Lindsay. Hoben died in 1935.
