Biographical Text

Henry Jarvis Raymond was a journalist and the founder of The New York Times. He attended the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary (later Syracuse University) and the University of Vermont. He then worked as a journalist for the New York Tribune, Courier, and Enquirer. In 1851, Raymond and George Jones formed Raymond, Jones & Company, and then founded The New York Times. Outside of journalism, Raymond was involved in politics and was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1850 and 1851. He later served as Speaker of the Assembly. From 1855 to 1856 he served as lieutenant governor. Raymond is sometimes referred to as the "godfather of the Republican Party" because of his involvement with its formation.

Raymond married Juliette Weaver in 1843. They had seven children together. Raymond died in 1869 of a heart attack.
