Biographical Text

Benjamin Wade was a U.S. Senator from Ohio, serving from 1851 to 1869. He was president pro tempore of the U.S. Senate during Andrew Johnson's impeachment, and he would have become President of the United States had Johnson been convicted in the Senate. Wade worked as a laborer on the Erie Canal before studying and practicing law in Ohio. In 1836, he served as the prosecuting attorney of Ashtabula County. Between 1837 and 1842, Wade served in the Ohio State Senate. In 1847, he was elected presiding judge of the third district, and from 1847 to 1851 he was a judge of common pleas in Summit County. Wade was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1851 as a member of the Whig Party, though he later joined the Republican Party. He was considered a radical politician at the time, supporting women's suffrage, trade union rights, and equality for African-Americans.

Wade was married to Caroline Marie Rosecrans. They had two children together. Wade died in 1878.
