Miss Jane Addams,
Hull House, Chicago, Ill.

My dear Miss Addams:

I want you to see this editorial of mine with its reference to philanthropic work, including a conviction of mine which I have put very mildly and suggestively and which, perhaps, it may be worth your while to consider.

But the particular occasion for the present letter is to ask you if, after the smoke of the campaign has cleared away, you will not prepare for the Century a short article of, say three or four thousand words, on "Heroism of the Humble," to include examples -- not necessarily with names -- of those among the poor and laboring classes, or showing high qualities of heroism and sacrifice. I want to strike a sympathetic note of the sort that you are always striking.

Cordially yours,

R. U. Johnson [signed]
